Can
anyone join the band?
Yes. The only stipulation is that
you can at least play and read music to a reasonable standard, as we don't give
tuition to absolute beginners. However, we can soon put you in contact with
some first rate teachers. Also see the following question.
Do
I have to audition for the Number One Band?
No. But if we are unsure of your playing abilities,
we may ask you to play for a while with the Number Two Band
until we are sure which band might be the more suitable for you to play
in. Occasionally, if we have too many players for the positions available for a contest etc. those players may be asked to audition, so as to ascertain who will be the ones chosen to participate in the contest.
How
do I join?
All you
need do is contact the secretary of
the band, or send us an email and we can arrange a practice night for you to come along to. It's then a simple matter of signing for
any instruments/uniform items that are issued and your in!
What
does the band supply me when I join?
All items that are issued are dependant on
availability. However, the band will issue you with an instrument and
a full uniform i.e. hat, shirt, tie, epaulettes, pants/skirt and coat. This
differs a little for the Number Two Band, as their uniform is only a white
shirt (not issued), black pants (not issued) and tie (issued). Instrument
issue is the same.
What
happens if I lose one of the things I was issued?
All instruments are insured for
damage etc and the band will cover the cost of instruments requiring
repair due to normal wear and tear.
However, if one is lost or damaged
through simple neglect/carelessness, then the onus is on the person
to whom it was issued to replace the instrument. For uniforms, unless
there are extenuating circumstances, then the repair/replacement for
all items of uniform issued, is the responsibility of the person to
whom the uniform was issued.
Do
I have to pay anything to join?
All members are charged an annual fee which
helps to offset such costs as insurance, new uniforms, instrument
repairs etc.
How
often do you play out and practice?
We may go away to contests 3-4 times a year and be involved in 1-2 playouts every couple of months or so on average (of course this can vary at busy times of the year such as at Christmas). We also try to have at least one major concert per year, which generally involves various other singing, dancing and musical groups in the community.
Both bands practice once a week on a Wednesday.
